What Is an Occupational Therapist Health Writer (And Why You Might Need One)?

September 2, 2025

Since I started my health writing business, the most common question I get is, “What does an occupational therapist do as a health writer?” Some of my colleagues upon reading some of my previous assignments have even said, “Why are you writing about topics that aren’t related to therapy?” It seems there is huge lack of understanding about the profession of health writing and especially how it relates to my occupational therapy degree.

An occupational therapist (OT) health writer combines clinical expertise with writing skills to create clear, accurate, and engaging content related to health, wellness, and rehabilitation, especially through the lens of occupational therapy.

More Than Therapy: The Hard Conversations That Make Us Better OTs

“Your kiddo successfully tied his shoes today without any help! He is so excited!”

“This new equipment will help your little girl stand without anyone having to help her.”

My son and I love the movie Ron’s Gone Wrong. We have watched it over and over because the many oopsie-daisies of a slightly less-than-perfect robot are quite amusing. For instance, Ron tends to learn about his world by determining how much effort it takes to destroy items via burning, melting, or dismembering them. While comical, I am pretty sure I would not want this robot in charge of any areas of my life!  I certainly would not let him take control of any aspects of my business, lest I find my laptop in flames in the fire pit.

While this movie is full of absurdities, it has a pretty strong take-home message: our world still desperately needs the human element despite the many advancements of technology. This theme rings true for those of us in the world of content
